Hi.

Popstar: Never Stop, Never Stopping

This movie is dumb as hell, but in the best way possible. A mockumentary is the perfect format to showcase some of Lonely Island’s best work since SNL.

Popstar: Never Stop, Never Stopping is a mockumentary about pop star Connor 4 Real as he releases his next hit album. Connor is the break out star from the 90’s boy band The Style Boyz, and he has left his friends behind to be a solo artist. The “documentary” follows Connor as his album tanks; he falls out of popularity, and struggles to stay relevant on tour.

This movie is just as dumb as you would expect, but the humor hits so hard you will be laughing all the way through. The choice to make this in a mockumentary style fits the jokes so well and they do things in this film I haven’t seen before from this genre. This whole film feels very real because of all the brilliant celebrity cameos in it. The movie has some of the biggest artists commenting (as themselves) on Connor’s rise and fall in popularity. The Lonely Island guys are great in their roles and Andy Samberg really stands out as a unique comedy genius.

Most of the jokes do hit hard in this film but some sections that feel like transitions between bits. These transition pieces did make the pacing feel a bit uneven throughout the 90 min run time, but when you get into the next brilliant bit the film picks right back up!

Overall I had a lot of fun with this movie and although the humor is supremely dumb it had me laughing out loud in the theater.
