Not all reboots are made equal, but if there was a series that deserved a JJ Abrams update it is Star Wars! Oh this is the other space movie….. well shit.
Star Trek Beyond this is the third installment of JJ’s first attempt at a reboot series set in space. This installment begins With Kirk and his crew exploring the great beyond, searching the stars for new worlds and new adventures. We catch up with our crew after 5 years of exploring and the long journey is starting to take its toll. After returning to the new space station they receive a strange distress signal that sends them back into the fray of battle looking for survivors.
I will admit from the start that I wasn’t the biggest fan of Star Trek; this movie has changed my mind. Star Trek’s whole reboot has brought me into a story I wasn’t familiar with, and I have enjoyed the new crew and the relationships that have formed between movies. A strong advantage Star Trek: Beyond holds is being the third in the series. This film can now really start to explore the depths of the amazing characters and their relationships. One that I found especially interesting was Kirk and Bones. These two had great chemistry and played off each other really well. This instalment also felt a bit more like Star Trek than JJ’s interpretation of the material. Hardcore Trekie fans will appreciate the tone and although it is not a full return to form, it falls closer to the OG series then its predecessors in the trilogy.
The weakest parts of this movie were the storyline. The film seemed to get tripped up between action scenes and it felt a bit uneven. This ultimately didn’t take away any of my enjoyment and I ended up loving this movie.
This movie was a fun summer blockbuster that will keep a smile on your face from start to finish. To all those nerds who think Star Trek is the superior space opera…. Live long and prosper.
