This film tricked me into not only learning about figure skating, but I can honestly say that I am now invested in Figure skating. Perfect timing for this movie to come out as we start the winter Olympics this week.

I, Tonya is a bio pic about Tonya Harding, Figure Skating’s biggest villain. Everyone knows about the 1994 Winter Olympics where Tonya Harding (Allegedly) put out a hit on fellow competitor Nancy Kerrigan and had two men bash in her knee right before qualifiers. This film covers that “Incident” as Tonya calls it in depth, but it also covers Tonya’s childhood and aftermath of that famous night.

The shining star of this film are the performances. There is no other way to start the review then to give recognition of this stellar cast. Margot Robbie, Allison Janney, and Sebastian Stan all give amazing performances that show off their acting chops in a film that will be well featured at the Oscars this year. Allison Janney especially steals the show, she completely transforms into Tonya’s overbearing, rotten and cruel Mother.

The problem with this movie is that although it had amazing moments I thought it had an issue tying them all together. This film seemed a little long, and parts of the story could be cut out without taking away from the overall plot. The director chooses to film this story in a documentary style which adds some unique flair and interesting POV, but I feel failed to communicate a clear story from start to finish.

Overall this is a fun movie with great acting, that is timed perfectly against the backdrop of the winter Olympics. I recommend you see it and I promise you will be thinking about triple axels with Margot Robbie all night.
