Solo: A Star Wars Story

Solo: A Star Wars Story

Where to start with this… I like Star Wars, no I love Star Wars. It has played such a massive part of my childhood and I love the campiness and charm of the original trilogy. My problem as a grow older is that as they continue to make movies they keep shrinking the world. Every story touches (sometimes overlaps) the original trilogy and the characters that made them so special. It makes the world feel small and takes away a lot of the mystery I had when watching these films as a kid. Solo is a prime example of what I am starting to dislike about Star Wars.

Solo follows a Young Han as he develops into the lovable smuggler featured in the original trilogy. We have now seen almost every part of Han’s life outside of his actual birth. He grew up and eventually escaped from the criminal organization based on Corillia and starts down a path that explains all of his signature (and not so signature) traits.

This movie answers a lot of questions that I honestly didn’t care about, how did Han get his last name? how did Han get his blaster? How did he know how to shoot first? This goes on and on. The movie also showed us some cool moments, like Han walking on the Falcon for the first time, and Han meeting Chewy, so I guess you have to take the good with the bad?

The best way I can describe this movie is inconsistent, there were some amazing parts that colored in stories fans have only speculated about, and some parts so dull it could have been in the old Star Trek episodes. I liked the performances and overall this film felt like Star Wars, but the lack of steaks and knowing where the story is headed hurt my enjoyment. Prequals are hard, Star Wars has proven this on enough occasions, and I think fans really don’t care that much about filling in backstories anymore. I can only speak for myself, but take the handcuffs off Disney! Give me a new story with new characters in this familiar world that I love. Always having to answer to over 40 years of cannon has started taking its toll on this series and Solo is a perfect example of why they should avoid it.

Overall, The movie was fine. Not the garbage fire everyone on the internet is saying it is. But the fans have spoken Disney, prequals are not what people are getting out to the theater anymore. That being said I would watch the shit out of a Obi One Kenobi movie.
